We all know that L.A. has a disproportionate amount of skinny girls. Although many resort to drastic measures (a la Kelly fainting from too many diet pills in the original Beverly Hills 90210), L.A. is a town where itʼs pretty easy to be healthy. Itʼs also pretty easy to get a Philly cheese steak at 2 am. However, one of the first things I discovered when I got to L.A. was Farmerʼs Markets. Thereʼs nothing better on a beautiful Sunday morning than taking your canvas tote (canvas totes are the only acceptable Los Angeles shopping bag, recyclable is the “green movement” of yesteryear), smelling all the fruits and vegetables, and eating free hummus (and goat cheese if youʼre lucky!) samples. Itʼs inexpensive and you really can make a day out of it. If youʼre used to eating things from a box that start in “lean” and end in “cuisine”, then Iʼve included some recipes. By the way, MEN, this is for you. There is nothing sexier than grilled vegetables. Trust me.
– Always bring cash. These are local farmers and small business, itʼs one of the rare times you canʼt get by just swiping a card.
– Walk around and check out multiple booths before you buy. Prices can vary but you definitely find deals cheaper than the local market. Take your time today. Tomorrow you will be filled with traffic.
– Some of the fruit is cosmetically challenged. Large chains pay big bucks for attractive fruit the way some men pay big bucks for attractive women. Real fruit has real flaws. It still tastes delicious.

Here are a couple recipes to get you started:
Farmerʼs Charm Guacamole
2 tsp fresh lime
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp salt
dash of pepper
1 diced roma tomato
3 tbsp chopped onion
1/2 tbsp minced garlic
1 tbsp mayonnaise
Mix together in a bowl! That was easy!
Apple Cole Slaw
3 cups chopped cabbage
2 apples, cored and chopped
1 large carrot, grated
2 green onions, finely chopped
1/3 c brown sugar
1/3 c mayonnaise
lemon juice to taste
In one bowl mix all produce. In another bowl mix sugar, mayonnaise, and lemon juice. Pour the contents of one bowl into the other and mix that together. Sooo Easy!
As you can see, I like to impress with the least effort possible. Both these dishes are good for you and great for a party or picnic. Enjoy summer!
